The University of Johannesburg Student Finance is a support division and is responsible for delivering accurate student account statements. UJ Student Finance strives to give excellent service to all students, parents, sponsors, donors and external clients.
The Student Debtors Department is a decentralised division with a full debtors’ service on all campuses. The Bursary Department is centralised at the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus.
Payments of student accounts can be made at the Cashiers on campus only for debit and credit card payments or by bank guaranteed cheque. Payments can also be made at any Absa Bank. Online payments (e-payments) can also be made by debit and credit card. Electronic payments via your internet banking can be made directly into the University’s banking account, by using your student number or identity number in the reference column.

Bursaries
The Bursary Department has various sponsors that are willing to assist deserving students who perform well academically with bursaries.
Merit bursaries: All qualifying students have to apply for a merit bursary via the UJ student portal. The steps to follow when students apply on the student portal are:
- Log onto the student portal using your student number and pin.
- Click on “Merit Bursary Application”.
- Choose the correct bursary from the dropdown list.
- Click on “Save”.
National Student Financial Aid Scheme
The University of Johannesburg offers a loan option for financially needy and academically deserving students. It is called a NSFAS loan, which is an acronym for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. A NSFAS loan is an amount of money you borrow from NSFAS to cover the costs associated with your tertiary studies. NSFAS is a statutory body, funded primarily by South Africa’s National Department of Education, providing study loans to academically able but financially needy students who wish to study at one of South Africa’s public higher education institutions.
NSFAS has appointed the University of Johannesburg (UJ) to administer funds on its behalf. The loan is for full-time undergraduate students with South African citizenship. A NSFAS loan may be used to pay tuition fees, books and University accommodation fees. Students must apply annually for the loan before 1 November of each year.
