Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu on Saturday said more women are needed in top positions in the mining industry.
Shabangu was speaking to Wits students at the mining conference in Johannesburg.
The minister said there are still too few women in key positions in the mining industry.
She says in Canada, there are many women in mining positions and there is no reason why it should not be the same here in South Africa.
She added that she is hoping to see the fairer sex steering the mining sector by the time she retires.
Meanwhile, Shabangu has maintained that Julius Malema’s views on nationalisation of the mines are not government policy.
