22 year-old Social Sciences student, Lisa Sidambe was chosen to participate in the Harvard World Model United Nations (WorldMUN) conference. The student simulation conference of the United Nations was held in Brussels, Belgium on the 17th to the 21st of March 2014.
To take part in the conference, Monash South Africa was looking for a student with the ability to constructively debate and discuss the most challenging global issues. Lisa’s leadership influence extends beyond her immediate community and the passion that she has about all issues that stimulate intellectual debate made her the perfect candidate.
The conference mainly focuses on the simulated debates similar to the discussions held by the political ambassadors at the United Nations. Some of the key topics included: arms control, organ trafficking, state building and the effect of ethnic conflicts on world stability.
Lisa’s role in the conference was as the Nigerian Director General of State Security Service, Ita Ekpeyong. Her committee was responsible for addressing the challenges of organ trafficking and the foreign policies aimed towards eradicating global challenges. All of the committee sessions were held at Egmont Palace, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Belgium.
As no stranger to leadership, Lisa has served as an African ambassador in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, but describes her trip to the WorldMUN conference as a once-in-a-lifetime experience: “Engaging, networking and gaining allies like a diplomat was extremely exciting for me. I was not just simulating a diplomat – I was one”.
