The North-West University has recently successfully launched a new Mobile App to the Google Play, the Apple App and Blackberry stores. This first of its kind application is also a first for South African Universities and will astound NWU students and staff with its functionality.

The NWU Mobile App now provides students and staff members on all three campuses with a unique set of mobile tools for administrative, Academic and informative purposes. The NWU Mobile App is built on Kuali Mobility for the Enterprise (KME) framework, and is using state-of-the-art technologies. This technology allows access to all mobile users via mobile browsers.

Functions include a buy tool which enables students and staff to buy mobile airtime. Other tools include live streaming to PUKfm, access to the student Newspaper, official NWU news, a chat tool for internal communication between staff and students and also allowing communication between student groups and students, and a tool to access academic results. Campus maps as on Google and a help-functionality where all emergency numbers can be accessed will be available on the NWU Mobile App. Students will also be able to check their balances of the student cards and access the e-Fundi academic website from their mobile devices.

The app is integrated with existing business systems to ensure the internal security of the app, as no data is duplicated if it already exists at another business source. Standard network authentication details are used to provide the user with his/her campus specific set of tools as well as roles and permissions pertaining to the individual.
