The Herald Matric of the Year was launched in 1993, and has become one of the most sought after awards offered to matriculants of the Eastern and Southern Cape.
Each year, the school head or school representatives are invited to take the opportunity to nominate their leading Grade 12 learners who could benefit enormously from this prestigious competition. Since the competition’s inception 20 years ago, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University has offered an undergraduate bursary to the Matric of the Year winner and a similar undergraduate scholarship to a deserving matriculant who has excelled despite being from a disadvantaged background.
Each year the judges have a very difficult task of selecting the finalists from over 130 top achievers across the Eastern and Southern Cape. Twenty finalists will be selected from all the entrants. Thereafter five finalists will be selected for the Excellence Awards. Four will receive Excellence Awards for outstanding effort in one of the following four categories: Academic, Sport, Culture, and Community Work. The fifth Excellence award takes the form of a Scholarship Award for a deserving candidate from a disadvantaged background.
The 20 finalists chosen are acknowledged in The Herald as well as during their Audio Visual presentation which is shown at the prestigious Awards Evening where sponsors and school heads gather to recognise each of the twenty finalists before the Top 5 Awards and the winner is announced.
The Herald Matric of the Year competition is highly regarded by matrics throughout the province as a means of giving recognition to those who have worked so hard in many fields.
This worthwhile project involves the young achievers and decision makers of the future and The Herald in association with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University is committed to continuing this project for the benefit of all matric learners in the Eastern and Southern Cape.
