According to Statistics South Africa’s Quarterly Labour Force Survey released on 29 October 2013, the unemployment figures for quarter 3 of this year in South Africa though declining is still at a staggering high. The survey revealed an unemployment rate of 24.7% a decline of 0.9% from the previous quarter. The figures are derived from the working age population of South Africa comprised of people aged 15 – 64 years.
These statistics are somewhat overwhelming, and entrepreneurship is often seen as a solution to the rising problem, but even the concept of entrepreneurship is lost on most people, who see entrepreneurship as a last resort to not being able to find a job.
Lydia Zingoni Founder and Director of the SA Teen Entrepreneur Foundation, is asking the question whether or not having entrepreneurial parents or relatives has an impact on the next generation of entrepreneurs? Teen Entrepreneur Foundation which was started in 2010 exists for the sole aim of instilling a culture of entrepreneurship in teenagers in South Africa and beyond by advocating that “Big ideas start young”.
There are currently 18,5 million Teens in South Africa out of a total population of 49 Million people. Teenagers therefore represent more than a third of the nation’s population. Through SA Teen Entrepreneur Foundation Lydia’s dream is to create entrepreneurial programs, competitions and networks that will penetrate to teenagers in all provinces within South Africa.
To foster this train of thought and to answer the question of generational impact, David Chait, previous owner of Vida e Café and Rikki’s Taxis currently owner of Mr Delivery has been invited as speaker to a breakfast seminar to share his experiences and life lessons. The event themed: Awakening the Giant in You will take place on Friday, 29 November 2013 at the Southern Sun, Newlands at 08h00.

David has been an entrepreneur since the age of 19 when he started his first business while at Varsity. Years later, at only 22 years of age, a failed business venture placed him in debt of R150 000. This experience did not sink his entrepreneurial spirit. Instead, he headed for the cruise ships to save up money with an action plan of getting himself out of the debt. He has since made major strides in business and having triumphed over those struggles he is now known publically for his successful business interests in Vida e Caffe, Rikki’s Taxis and Mr Delivery.
