IN PURSUIT of its goal to become a sustainable institution, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University is hosting a sustainability seminar in which the institution’s “green” champions will share success stories and seek solutions for the future.
The university has also joined hands with the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) and Oldenburg University in Germany in presenting the day-long seminar on Thursday 28 November. The sustainability-themed “One planet living: Implications for Universities” is aimed at seeking solutions for sustainable future.
“We want to try to establish what NMMU should, and can, do to promote sustainability. As a university we have a responsibility to future generations,” says NMMU Infrastructure Planning Director Greg Ducie, who is part of the organising team.
Head of the Living Planet Unit at the WWF Saliem Fakir will deliver the keynote address, while various senior NMMU academics will showcase their ongoing sustainability work.
Digital film clips of the work of conservationist Prof Graham Kerley, business management’s Prof Miemie Struwig, Earth Stewardship Science pioneer Maarten De Wit, inventor extraordinaire Prof Ben Zeelie, computer science gurus Prof Andre Calitz and Dr Brenda Scholtz, and the Centre for Renewable Energy’s Ernest van Dyk will be shared.
The ongoing partnership with the Oldenburg University via DAAD (The German Academic Exchange Service) will also be shared. The WWF will share success stories too. The signing of a memorandum of understanding between the partners will conclude the seminar.
The seminar starts at 8am at NMMU’s Indoor Sport Centre on South Campus.
