Four Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Nursing Science students left for America last week to spend four weeks at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University (SBSJU) and St Cloud State University (SCSU) as part of an exchange programme.
According to the exchange agreement, NMMU sends four nursing students for four weeks where they will spend two weeks at SBSJU and two weeks at St Cloud. A Nursing Science department staff member accompanies the students for two weeks in order for him/her to experience both SBSJU & SCSU.
While the nursing students are visiting the campuses, they will attend nursing classes, meet students who are also studying nursing, visit local hospitals and experience various cultural opportunities. “The programme benefits all of the students involved as they learn about similarities and differences within their field of study. It is wonderful for the students to learn how things are done on the other side of the world so that they can take what they learn and apply it to their own studies,” says Tohiera Moodien from the NMMU Office for International Education.
SBSJU students have been studying at NMMU since 1998 at the then University of Port Elizabeth. In addition, the nursing departments at both institutions had their own semester-long exchange programme which ran from 2001-2007.
The four students, Yonwaba Madikizela, Kate Leistre, Hassinah Mohammed and Candice Gunn, are all excited to have been chosen for the programme and are looking forward to apply what they will learn to their studies at NMMU.
