NMMU Interior Design students won a golden award for design and excellence for their stand at the recent Algoa FM Homemaker’s Expo.

The design of third-year Kirsten Lawrence, who was assisted by her fellow students, competed against 219 other stands for top recognition.

“Design and implementation forms part of the third-year design students’ curriculum and the students were asked to design a stand. Kristen’s was chosen and then implemented by the students,” said a proud interior design lecturer Charista Killian.

The students were also asked to complete a design proposal for the entrance and again, the best design was implemented.

According to Charista, the students had to find sponsors and implement the designs themselves. They, along with second-year students, also manned the stands to interact with the public.

“This gives them excellent exposure to working with expo designs and the limitations that goes along with it,” she said.

In addition, the creative class conjured up a Chair for Charity installation and four students designed the new Home Secrets stand which introduces new trends and local designers to the public.

According to Charista, the Chairs for Charity innovation challenges local designers to upscale an old chair to fit in with the expo’s theme of “Bold, Bright and Beautiful”.

Some of these chairs were then auctioned off to raise funds for charity.
