Professor Ahmed Bawa has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor of the Durban University of Technology (DUT) with effect from September, it was announced on Thursday.
“Professor Bawa has an impeccable academic and leadership record and his strong research background will be an asset to the DUT community,” the university said in a statement. Originally from Seven Oaks, near Greytown in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, he holds a MSc degree from the University of Durban-Westville and a PhD from the University of Durham in the United Kingdom.
He has served as the deputy vice-chancellor and principal of the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Durban campus and is former chairman of the National Research Foundation and a member of the National Advisory Council of Innovation. He has also written more 30 articles in prestigious journals and was a programme officer for the Ford Foundation.
At the moment, Bawa is a professor of physics and associate provost at the City University of New York. The university said he was also one of the select few given access to the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva in Switzerland, working on a global project addressing the most fundamental questions of physics. “This reinforces his outstanding global reputation and value,” it said.
