The JS Gericke Library:

The JS Gericke library occupies the unique position of being the only library in SA to be built underground. This preserved the historical importance of the Jan Marais Square (situated above the library) and the architectural aesthetics of historic buildings surrounding the square.
The JS Gericke Library can accommodate approximately one million volumes. It also provides 1400 study seats, 10 seminar rooms, 27 study cubicles and a well-appointed lecture hall with 146 seats.

Computer Areas:

The University of Stellenbosch has a computer area for every faculty that is equipped to host both seated and standing students – providing areas for typing assignments, checking emails and doing research.

Electronic Systems Laboratory (ESL)

The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ESL) provides opportunities to graduate students and industries to become involved in joint developments of significant size and aims to maintain skills in computers, data communications, imaging and system simulation through prototype developments with industry.

DSP Research Group

The Digital Signal Processing Group (DSP Research Group) focuses on:

  • Speech processing using neural networks, Markov models, fractals.
  • Image processing, including stereo-vision and structure-from-motion.
  • Broadcasting problems, including telecommunications and active sonar.
  • Software Defined Radio development.

Research Facilities:

Centre for Research on Science and Technology (CREST)

The Centre for Research on Science and Technology conducts research on the nature of science and technology with specific reference to science and technology policy in South Africa and Africa.

Laser Research Institute (LRI)

The Laser Research Institute promotes the aims of the Department of Physics at the University of Stellenbosch and strives to be a centre of excellence in laser science and technology and laser applications, with a research focus on laser based diagnostics, laser research and development and laser applications in the medical and industrial field.
