Roots

The Tiso Foundation (the Foundation) was one of the principal and founding shareholders of the Tiso Group (Pty) Ltd (Tiso Group), an investment holding company established in June 2001. In July 2011 Tiso Group merged with Kagiso Trust Investments to form Kagiso Tiso Holdings (KTH) resulting in Tiso Foundation becoming a principal shareholder in KTH.

The deliberate decision to bequeath a substantial portion of their individual shares, by the founders of Tiso Group stands as testimony to their vision. The vision of creating a leading pan-African investment holding company owned and managed by African professionals and simultaneously enabling the creation of a self-sustainable, independent Foundation that will ensure that previously disadvantaged youth and communities benefit from the commercial endeavours of the company without dependence.

The Foundation was registered as a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) in May 2002 and the shareholding value of the Foundation in KTH is today worth approximately R750 million. The Foundation’s founding trustees mandated the organisation to prioritise support to the development of black youth whose future fortunes are intricately tied to the future of our country.

“South Africa can never invest sufficiently in the development of world class skills. Government, business, civil society organisations need to agree that the effort to develop suitable skills, educational facilities and leaders of the future is a national priority that benefits all.”
