Introduction


This programme consists of two years full-time study at NMMU followed by a year of in-service training in a suitable laboratory. The study of Chemistry involves investigation, observation, measurement, critical thinking, problem solving and scientific reasoning. Chemistry being a central science is studied together with other related science disciplines.

Practical lab work and theoretical studies form an essential part of chemistry programmes at NMMU.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR CURRENT GRADE 12 LEARNERS


  • Admission Points Score of 34.

  • Minimum NSC requirements for diploma entry must be met.

  • English, Afrikaans or isiXhosa (home language or first additional language) on at least level 3 (40-49%).

  • NSC achievement rating of at least 3 (40-49%) for Mathematics.

  • NSC achievement rating of at least 3 (40-49%) for Physical Sciences.

  • If an applicant has not taken the optional Mathematics topics, additional modules may be added, which may extend the duration of study.

  • Applicants with an Admission Points Score between 24 and 33 may be referred to write the Access Assessment Battery before a decision is made on whether or not to admit the applicant to the course.


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS WHO MATRICULATED PRIOR TO 2008

  • Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification with Mathematics and Physical Science (minimum SG=D) and English (minimum HG=D).

  • Learners must score at least 28 points on the university’s SPS rating scale.

  • Applicants who do not meet the requirements for direct admission, and who have an SPS of 18 or higher, may be referred to write the Access Assessment Battery before a decision is made on whether or not to admit the applicant to the course.


SITE OF DELIVERY
This qualification will be presented on the Summerstrand North Campus of the university.

DURATION
Two years of full-time study at the NMMU followed by one year in-service training in a suitable laboratory, which includes Chemical Industry Practical and Chemistry Project.
