UJ HAS FREE 24-HOUR CRISIS LINE FOR STUDENTS
UJ provides psychological services with the aim of attending to psychological issues through therapy, writes Herman Esterhuizen, media relations co-ordinator at the University of Johannesburg.
I respond to Lucky Shenge’s letter ‘‘Support UJ students’’ (March 26).
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) strives to create a stimulating higher education environment, and students’ needs, safety and constitutional rights are recognised as a priority for the university.
These therapeutic services are usually rendered by way of face-to-face psychotherapy. During this process, the psychologist uses therapeutic techniques to address various psychological issues, such as depression, anxiety, trauma and relationship problems.
UJ’s Therapeutic Team oversees the provision of face-to-face therapy with students.
In addition, they also provide group therapy in the form of support groups with students’ families.
The University also has a free 24 hour Crisis Line, where students can obtain telephone counselling on emotional crises such as suicide, depression, anxiety, panic and general other psychological problems; problems with adjusting to university etc.
House Committee members are elected annually by the students in the respective residences.
Their main duties are to represent residence students to the residence management.
