UFS RAISES ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
The entrance requirements to study at the University of the Free State (UFS) in Bloemfontein will be increased by two points from next year. This is to ensure that Kovsies is recognised as one of the top 200 universities in the world.
This means the current AP score (admission points required) will be increased by two points in each of the next two years. Currently the AP is 28, in 2011 it will be 30 and in 2012 it will be 32. This was announced by Professor Jonathan Jansen, rector of the UFS, at the Nellie Swart club on Saturday.
“At this stage Kovsies has the highest student drop-out rate in the country. The country’s education system is in deep trouble, but we can’t compensate for that. If schools don’t work, the country can’t work.” Jansen also said professorships won’t be appointed as easily in future.
“We have become too used to mediocrity. A lecturer will have to produce and publish excellent research outputs, which should be comparable to the best in the world.” Jansen said: “There are only two things I want to achieve in my five-year contract at Kovsies. I keep these in mind every day: I want to make sure our young people know how to live in peace with one another.
