NYDA TO LAUNCH "DOWN WITH NYAOPE CAMPAIGN" AHEAD OF THE FESTIVE SEASON
Statistics released by the Hospital Association of South Africa (Hasa) indicate that an increased number of patients younger than 20 years old are being admitted to treatment centers owed to substance abuse related trauma. Furthermore, figures show that it is not uncommon for children as young as 10 or 11 to be experimenting with drugs.
The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) will be visiting Nyaope addicts and their families in Ga-Rankua, North of Pretoria in a bid to further rid communities of the scourge of drug abuse ahead of the festive season. Support will be provided to the families of addicts who have become victims of crime at the hands of their children and are fighting their own battles in combatting substance abuse.
Addicts on the streets of the township will be consulted and offered an opportunity to enter rehabilitation and will be presented with alternatives to a life of drug abuse through the NYDA’s various products and services.
According to NYDA Executive Chairperson, Mr. Yershen Pillay, “A vigorous education campaign will be targeted at the youth about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse and stern warnings to be extra vigilant during the festive season when risky behaviour is at its peak will be issued by community leaders, law enforcement authorities and the NYDA.
