ERASMUS MUNDUS PROJECT KICKS OFF AT CPUT

CPUT was recently represented at two Erasmus Mundus Project (EMP) kick-off meetings that were held at Leuven and Antwerp Universities in Belgium.  Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Technology Innovation and Partnerships Dr Chris Nhlapo, Executive Adviser to the Vice-Chancellor Dr Nomathamsanqa Tisani and International Affairs Director Merle Hodges attended the meetings from 13 to 16 September 2010.

The EMP is a European Union initiative that seeks to establish partnerships between European Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and their local counterparts offering scholarships, varying in duration from three months to two years to postgraduate study or research initiatives.

The EMP goal is to promote European higher education throughout the world, to establish Europe as a setting for par excellence higher education and to offer a valuable framework for exchange and dialogue between cultures.

According to Tisani, the kick-off meetings followed CPUT securing membership in two consortia under the EMP; with Leuven and Antwerp Universities co-ordinating EMA2SA and EUROSA consortia respectively.

The EMP fosters institutional co-operation in the field of higher education between the European Union and ‘Developing Countries’ through a mobility scheme addressing student and academic exchanges for the purpose of studying, teaching, training and research.

Tisani said: “For CPUT the Erasmus Mundus Project promises to give a special boost to transformation through the potential it holds for capacity building among staff. The focus will be on Master’s and Doctoral applicants.”

Each consortium was awarded €1.6 million which is to be divided among member institutions of the consortium.
