DSSA STUDENT STUNS WITH BAROQUE ENSEMBLE TO WIN YOUNG DESIGNER COMPETITION
Jasmine Huang, a fashion design student at the Design School Southern Africa (DSSA), has won the prestigious 2015 Gauteng Sansui Summer Cup Young Designer Award. DSSA is an educational brand of The Independent Institute of Education (Pty) Ltd. (The IIE), which is internationally accredited by the British Accreditation Council (BAC).
The Sansui Summer Cup, Johannesburg’s oldest and most respected first-grade horse race, was held at the magnificent Turffontein Racecourse. With a prize of R2 million for the exciting main race, the event draws the city’s most glamorous residents, making it a day filled with both innovative new designs and high fashion. It’s the ideal platform for the Young Designer Competition, which has been put together through the efforts of the race organisers, Steele Model Studio and DSSA in order to offer students the opportunity to showcase their collections in front of this illustrious gathering of industry players.
Jasmine was one of five young designers selected to present their collections on the day, all specifically created towards the 2015 theme of Pink & Glam. Huang’s show-stopping outfit of black, pink and gold showed creative integration of baroque masked ball mystery and chic modern sophistication.
“I was over the moon just to be able to show my designs, but being selected as the winner in front of this kind of audience is every designer’s dream,” says Huang. “The event itself was superbly managed, so the most difficult part of the day was keeping my nerves in check and making sure my designs came across as I envisioned them.”
As the winner of the competition, Huang was awarded R26 000 towards her career. “It’s such a tough industry, and this will be of enormous benefit to my career with regards to exposure as well as financially,” she adds.
DSSA offers training in graphic, fashion and interior design, and The IIE graduates from DSSA are well respected throughout the design industry due to the balance between developing natural creative potential with instilling vocational preparedness via academic excellence and industry experience. Small classes allow lecturers to guide each student according to their strengths and weaknesses while offering a learning environment geared towards imparting the tools required for success in this exciting, but challenging industry.
