BOOZING PUPILS APOLOGISE

Three West Rand school pupils have apologised publicly to President Jacob Zuma, the department of education and their community after they made front page news for drinking cider on their way to school.

“My heartfelt apology goes to the president, the minister of education, district officials, the people of South Africa, our teachers, the police, fellow pupils and our families,” said 18-year-old Thato Zwane at Mandisa Shiceka Secondary School in Kagiso, Krugersdorp on Fridayl, the Sowetan newspaper reported on Monday.

“What we did was totally wrong and we regret it.”

They had destroyed the image of two schools, (the other was Madiba Secondary School) the community of Kagiso, the department and the country, the remorseful youth said.

“I hope this apology is kindly accepted because we feel bad about what we did.”

Zuma, the department, the police and the school have accepted their apology.

Zuma’s spokesman Zizi Kodwa said young people sometimes “cross the line”.

“They did the right thing (by apologising) and we hope they will not do it again,” he said.

The two other grade 12 pupils — Bonginkosi Jaji and Sabelo Mathenjwa –have since completed a disciplinary process at their school, Madiba Secondary. They were suspended a day after the incident.

Zwane’s mother Phindi Mofokeng said she and her son were undergoing counselling and he was due to start his disciplinary process.
