ABOUT UFS

The University of Free State (UFS) is recognised as a leader in the transformation process in South African higher education – a view endorsed by former President Nelson Mandela, who has lauded our University for its transformation and language policies.

If you are part of the University of Free State you are part of the culture of being a kovsie. Ask any alumni if you’d like, but there’s strength and honour in that name.

The University of the Free State is situated in the heart of the central region of South Africa. The University is an important centre for research and has close ties with a number of universities on the continent as well as around the world.


Our six faculties offer a full range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Namely:

  • Faculty of Theology
