3500+ TEACHERS AND EDUCATORS GATHER FOR AFRICAN EDUWEEK AT GALLAGHER FROM WEDNESDAY

First ever in South Africa: Graham Brown-Martin to showcase humanoid robot NAO

More than 3500 teachers, educational professionals, institutions and suppliers to the industry are gathering for the ninth annual SABC Education African EduWeek at the Gallagher Convention Centre, Johannesburg from Wednesday 1 July. The renowned educator and technologist, Graham Brown-Martin, will also introduce the humanoid robot NAO at E-Tech Africa, taking place alongside African EduWeek, and showcasing the classroom of the future.

Day to day challenges in the classroom
“This year the theme of African EduWeek is ‘Enter a world of educational knowledge’” says event director Tanya Jackman, “and we invite all teachers to join us for more than a hundred hours of free-to-attend EduTheatre sessions and teacher training workshops – focused on the daily challenges and topical developments that they face in their basic and higher education classrooms.” Session topics range from sex education, to school finance to e-learning and the challenge of teaching maths in schools.

Visitors at the event will also be able to view the latest products and services for the education sector in areas that include basic education, IT, higher education, publishing, inclusive education, science and maths, safety and security, sustainability and energy efficiency and school supplies and stationery.

“Bringing new energy into schools”
The South African Principals’ Association (SAPA) is an official supporting body this year. “At this year’s EduWeek we will focus on innovation for principals where we will share new ideas” says Marius Ehrenreich, President of SAPA.

He adds: “we will have an opportunity to have many, many teachers together and so this presents us with a wonderful opportunity to network, to share and what better place to share best practice than with such a large audience of teachers.”

Intel diamond sponsor
The global technology giant Intel returns as the exclusive diamond sponsor for the event. “Intel is committed to empowering the youth of South Africa through education and technology to unlock economic opportunity. It is imperative that the private and public sector work together in order to ensure that the youth of this country have a bright future filled with opportunity” says Andre Christian, Business Development Manager for Intel South Africa.

E-Tech Africa
A technology focused conference, E-Tech Africa, the first event of its kind in South Africa, takes place alongside African EduWeek and will provide an exciting glimpse into the classroom of the future.

Says Tanya Jackman: “we are particularly excited about Graham Brown-Martin, renowned educator and technologist, who will introduce South Africans for the first time to an incredible educational humanoid robot, Aldebaran Robotic’s latest masterpiece: NAO, the most widely used robot for academic purposes worldwide, with more than 5000 units in use in over 50 countries.” E-Tech Africa is the only paid for component of African EduWeek.

African EduWeek Awards
Also new at the event are the African EduWeek Awards, of which the finalists were announced last week. The awards showcase the most innovative and life-changing projects, organisations, companies, teachers and education professionals who have been responsible for pioneering new frontiers, pushing boundaries, for inspiring others and for achieving growth in education in Africa.

The award categories vary from supplier of the year in basic and high education to Community and NGO of the Year and the winners will be announced on Wednesday evening, 1 July. The winners in the Stars in Education Teachers Awards and Future Stars Awards, organised by Argo, will also be honoured during this evening.

African EduWeek is organised by Spintelligent, leading Cape Town-based trade exhibition and conference organiser, and the African office of Clarion Events Ltd, based in the UK.
